Cupcake Canne: Yes You Canne!

Cupcake Canne is a performer in West Hollywood, California who sure lives up to her name. Sweet as a cupcake but also very driven, she continues to put on a fabulous show when she's onstage and also stays true to herself when the curtains close.

1. Describe your drag persona.

My drag persona is really just and more ballsy version of myself. Everything that is off limits to my boy-self is fair game for Cupcake. If you're referring to my style then I'd say I'm attracted to vintage pinup stuff with a bit a rock'n roll and of course anything Mugler! 

2. What is your favorite song to perform to?

I'm not sure I have a favorite song to perform to. Whatever it is it has to be something that I feel. That's the only way I can take the crowd on a journey with me! 

3. When did you start doing drag?

I started doing drag about a year and a half ago. Not long really. I've been a dancer and performer since I was 9yrs old though. 

4. Do you consider yourself an introvert or an extrovert?

I think I'm both if that's allowed? Depends really on the situation I'm in. I'm kinda shy around people I don't know. 

5. What is your favorite/least favorite thing about the drag community?

I would say my favorite thing about drag is the feeling that I get when I know I've made a room full of people happy. My least favorite thing about the drag community would have to be all of the cattiness and bitchiness towards each other. We are all still men and we should act like men, not teenage girls! 

6. What is your secret to success?

I think for anyone you should always be someone that people want to work with. You could have talent but if you are nasty to work with then people will not want to be around you. I don't know if that's a secret really...

7. What is the biggest lesson you've learned regarding your drag career?

Don't fuck it up!

8. where did you learn how to do makeup?

I'm self taught with my painting skills! Watching tutorials, studying pictures or friends that tell me I look stupid help a lot! 

9. Do you have a drag family?

I have a drag mother or mentor, Ethylina Canne of Palm Springs. She's one of my dearest friends, She inspired me to do drag! It's hard to be in a bad mood when I'm around her! She has an infectious laugh. It's gross really... She's gross and I love her!

10. What is the best advice you could give someone who is interested in becoming a drag queen?

I would say never compare yourself to other queens. Always try to be a better version of yourself! 

11. If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

I would want the power to change my powers into any powers I wanted. Power power power! Did I say power enough?

12. At the Marco Marco fashion show, you went down the runway doing ballet. How long have you been doing ballet?

I actually walked in the Walter Mendez show in LA fashion week. It was an amazing experience and kind of a little gay boys dream come true! I've been a dancer since the age of 9. 

13. What is your most embarrassing moment?

I actually fell during a performance in a duet with my late friend Killer. It was at the Eagle while we were doing S&M by Rihanna and Britney. I fell not once but twice in a row... It was one of those moments where everything seem to happen in slow motion.

14. What was your favorite subject in school and why?

I don't remember... 

15. In your opinion, what is your best quality?

I think it's my ability to feel. My strong sensitivity, if that makes sense. It's makes me a better person as well as a better artist.

Veronica Pop: What's Poppin'?!

If you want a dose of funny mixed with a dose of beauty and a dash of sickening dance moves...Veronica Pop is your queen! But always remember...she's innocent...she promises! 

1. Describe your drag persona.

Veronica will sleep with your boyfriend and then fuck your brother and then hang out with your mother and call your sister, asking for a dollar and a ride back home. Veronica Pop is fully aware of whats poppin' in pop culture.

She knows every Top 40 song and what Kim Kardashian had for lunch that day.

Ms Pop has elements of old drag mixed in with sex kitten with a taste of old school hookers.

2. In your opinion, what is your biggest accomplishment?

Telling my parents about Veronica Pop.

3. What has been your biggest obstacle?

I go through random phases in my life where I want to quit drag and just be a basic gay boy but I have such an amazing group of friends that remind me everyday how awesome and talented I am. I don't know where I would be without Zach, Steve, Jossy, or April Showers.

4. When did you start doing drag?

I started doing drag like every other queen, HALLOWEEN! 

It was a costume party so I went as Ms Britney Spears 2007 era.

5. Where do you get your inspiration from?

Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Tumblr, & just life in general. 

6. What is your opinion on the Facebook real name policy? 

Thank god, I didn't get caught up on that policy but I think its extremely uncalled for and disrespectful for FB to make such a policy. I had 2 of my best friends get forced by FB to change their names and they weren't happy about it. I'm glad Sister Roma did what she did.

7. Who is your biggest inspiration and why?

Britney Spears.

I never really cared for her before her breakdown in 2007 but after all that stuff happened, she seemed real to me. 

Just the fact that she had such a public meltdown but yet still comes out on stage and performs is truly amazing. 

I know if I had a huge meltdown,I wouldn't leave my room for years. 

8. If you could work with anyone, who would it be and why?

I would LOVE to work with Tatiana from Drag Race, Season 2, I love how her style is very current & her look is super FISH!

9. What drag competitions have you participated in...(if any)?

Project Drag Season 3 at Mickeys, in West Hollywood.

10. Is there anything that you would change about yourself if given the opportunity? If so, what is it and why?

Confidence. I can perform in front of thousands but yet, I can't even tell a boy that I think they're cute.

11. What is your favorite song to perform to?

Work Bitch by Britney Spears.

12. What is your biggest pet peeve?

Wigs that aren't front lace.

13. What is your best quality?

Hair Flips. Ass. Boobs.

Rupaul's Drag Race: Helping or Ruining Drag?

Recently, more so than ever, I've come to find that the Rupaul's Drag Race fandom can be pretty shady. I've never really come to understand why since we're supposed to be part of a community where everyone can be accepted for who they are...but one thing I've come across is everyone is out for themselves. 

It's a huge shame, really, because drag to me means so much more than a TV show. I'm not discrediting Rupaul and he's done so much for us as a community but if anyone has noticed I really like to focus more on the culture itself rather than the TV show for a number of reasons.

One of those reasons is I don't want my page to be a shady place and I want to open people's eyes to what drag really is. If you really wake up and start doing research, you will find that drag is a variety of things and it's such a beautiful art that I've grown to love and appreciate since I started this page. I want the queens I feature to feel comfortable and to feel like they can trust me because I want to showcase them in the best light possible. I know some pages that just try and dig for scandalous information and I refuse to sell out to that for a few subscribers.

I feel like Drag Race has helped our community but it's also destroyed it. I feel that as a community we should stand together and be happy there's so much support and we should take pride in the fact that drag is a really popular thing. Let's take advantage of this opportunity, you know? But the fans of the show have really hurt each other and they treat queens like collectors items and if you don't meet as many queens as they do then they will pay you no mind. And not just any queens, Rupaul's Drag Race girls. 

Here's a piece of advice: 

Stop hurting each other. Stop being jealous. Stop treating this like its a competition. Learn to love drag for what it is...an art. It's an art where people should feel safe. It's not safe anymore. It's everyone bashing each other and trying to act superior. Stop it. Stand together...you aren't a drag expert because you watched a few seasons of a TV show. You should be supportive of each other. It's a family...not a war.

Another thing I wanted to address, is that some of the Drag Race girls act ungrateful and it really hurts the people that look up to them. Why would you be rude to someone who supports you? It doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Don't forget where you came from and who supported you from the beginning. The second you forget that is the second you will start to see people leave your side. It hurts them.

My mission with this page was to unite people and it seems like I've united some people but it's also cost me some friendships I thought I had as well. And if someone is treating you badly because you are out there making a name for yourself, they don't deserve your time. The queens and artists I feature mean more to me than anyone will ever know and I do this to help myself as well as other people learn more about them. I use my page to promote and help, not to ruin someone's career.

I try to focus on the positive aspects of the drag world and the wonderful artists who put so much work into what they do. I take a lot of pride in that and I'm really tired of the shade and jealousy in the drag community. This includes the fans.

Farrah Moan: Non-Materialistic Beauty

Farrah Moan is a female impersonator from Austin, Texas. One thing that makes her different from most impersonators is that she isn't materialistic and tries to focus on the positive side of life. 

1. Describe your drag persona.

Farrah is definitely fishy, flirty and fun. She's a total party girl- she always gets me in trouble. But anyone who meets her learns she's genuine, sweet and down to earth as well and she'll always try to make you laugh. 

2. What is your biggest pet peeve?

I'm torn between two. One, I hate when you're watching a movie with friends or family and someone gets a call and they just sit there on the phone while everyone's trying to watch. Sooo mean!! 

And two- I hate when my friends spouses fight with each other in front of me or other people. Like get it together! 

3. Do you have a drag family?

Yes! Serotonin and Rena Nevado, we're like the drag Charlie's Angels of Austin, TX!

4. What are your future goals?

I want to end up working in a really nice salon one day doing hair, makeup or both. I've just always enjoyed bringing out people's beauty and making them feel happy and confident.

5. Who is your biggest inspiration?

My mother for sure. Whenever I start feeling like life is hard I just think back to her working 4 jobs and being a single mother of two and then I snap out of it and realize I don't have it that bad. I love her.

6. Would you rather work with a group of people or do you prefer working by yourself?

I love working in groups, I feel like more brains is better than one!

7. What is one item that you can't live without?

I've found out that I can literally live without any and all material items. 

8. Have you ever felt misunderstood?

All the time.

9. What is one thing that no one knows about you?

I'm obsessed with any foods that have red dye number 40 in them.

10. Do you have a most embarrassing moment?

My train wreck of a life is a walking embarrassment Hahaha I'm always tripping on things when I'm trying to be cool and walk fiercely in my heels when I go out. I'm also always that bitch that has toilet paper stuck to her shoe, even if I just go to re-apply my lipstick, it never fails! *sigh*

11. In your opinion, what is your best feature?

I'm very fond of my legs.

12. How do you deal with negativity?

I don't- I just ignore it. It's on my list of things I don't have time for.

13. What has been your biggest accomplishment/obstacle?

I felt pretty accomplished when we had our 6th month of Tribute Tuesday, the show I host and put together. I've had shows in the past but they never lasted- there was always something missing. But I feel like we're onto something with this one and I really love doing it. 

14. When and why did you start doing female impersonation?

When I was little I wore dresses and played with dolls all the time- but when I really started to experiment with cross dressing and such was high school. My friends would dress me up and put me on chat roulette and see how man guys I could fool. I swear they enjoyed it more than me sometimes haha. But the idea of transforming into something else just always seemed like so much fun and one day I finally decided I was just gonna go hard and do it.  Farrah was born.

15. Where can people find you?

I host a show that is called Tribute Tuesday at Maria's Taco Xpress in Austin, TX and every month we pick a new artist to tribute. We raise money for a non profit organization called OUT YOUTH that provides free STD testing and counseling to LGBTQ teens and young adults.

Katana Rei: Determination and Grace

Finding queens who are well known and also humble can be a tough task sometimes. Katana Rei is a queen from Stockton, California who isn't just a performer in her area but has also been dedicated to YouTube as well. She's learned a lot and takes a lot of pride in her craft and isn't someone to disappoint a crowd.

1. Who is Katana Rei?

Katana Rei is just another pretty face.. just kidding. (even though most people would tell you that haha)  I never really know how to answer this question when people ask me. Since she's not a "character",  I guess Katana is just a projection of my inspirations jumbled up into one person. Yeah, that doesn't make much sense. sorry.

2. What does drag mean to you?

Drag for me is an escape from the realities of life. Its a glamour, a smokescreen that helps people forget their problems and have fun, for both the performers and the audience.  

3. What inspired you to start YouTube?

Youtube is what got me into makeup in the first place. I watched beauty videos for 2 years before even picking up my own makeup brushes. My initial idea for my channel was just to document my progress as a makeup artist. 

4. Where did you learn to do makeup?

The videos on youtube were where I learned makeup application techniques from the real girls. When I got into Drag I learned how to paint from YouTubers like Misty Maven (Petrilude) and Misty Eyez. Then I started doing the Rupaul's Drag Race inspired looks for my videos. So I just took what techniques i learned from that and applied them to my own styles.

5. Who would you say is your biggest inspiration?

I think for anyone who knows me, its no secret that my biggest Drag inspiration is Raven. For many reasons, not only her polished aesthetic, but also her versatility in her looks and performances. When you meet her in person she's very chill and humble. 

6. When and why did you start doing drag?

I first started performing in April of 2012. I wanted to do drag after watching Rupaul's Drag Race for 4 years. I was a dancer for 3 years so I already had some experience with performing on stage. 

7. How do you handle negativity?

I've learned that when dealing with negative people, its easiest just to not acknowledge it. I only have time for positive people. 

8. What is your most embarrassing moment?

Lucky for me I haven't had many embarrassing moments, at least with Drag. I've only had a wig malfunction once. and I've never fallen or tripped in my heels. I just hate when a costume change doesn't go as planned. Like just recently had a performance when my first outfit didn't come off right and I was standing there for like a minute trying to get it off. Luckily the crowd was small so I didn't care much.

9. If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

If I could meet anyone, it would probably be my grandmother who passed away when I was 7. Even though I did MEET her before. I just didn't have a chance to get to know my grandparents on my Japanese side. So I didn't really grow up with much influence from them.

10. Do you have a drag family?

I don't have a drag family like with a mother daughter sense. I just have close friends that I often perform together with. I guess we're sisters. But none of us took a name or anything. I didn't ever want a drag mother because I didn't want anyone to have the ability to take credit for what I do. Not that all drag mothers do that but I just like being able to do things myself. So i try to learn things on my own as much as possible. 

11. What is your favorite song to perform to?

I don't really have a favorite song to perform. I guess you could say that my favorite thing is to do characters from movies and TV shows. Like when I did Velma Kelly from Chicago or Cordelia from American Horror Story Coven. I love making special themed mixes and they usually end up being crowd pleasers.

12. What is your favorite item that you've purchased for drag?

I have phases in drag whenever i buy something new i end up wearing it a lot until I get bored. I had this one piece leotard thing that looked like something Beyoncé wore at the superbowl, a lot of queens have something similar. But i wore that thing out for a year whenever I could and it was only like $20 from Love Culture.

13. What is your favorite/least favorite thing about drag?

My favorite thing about drag is inspiring others to do what makes them happy. The cheering crowd is quite nice too. My least favorite is the drama that inevitably happens. It comes with the territory. It's almost unavoidable. But I try to avoid it when possible.

14. What is the best compliment/criticism that you've ever received?

I'm not sure if this is the best compliment but one of the funniest ones I got was a comment on youtube that said "looks like Raven, sounds like Raja". I just thought that was hilarious. I'm not sure about criticisms though since i get them on a daily basis.

15. Ugly and live forever or attractive and die in a year?

I'd be attractive and live for a year I think, because I'd hate to live forever. and at least i could make the most out of a year. 

16. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

To be honest  I dont even plan that far ahead. I just hope to be happy. Success would be nice and I'd like to not be single if anything.
