Joseph Harwood's Makeup Crash Course

Joseph Harwood is a very respected makeup artist who resides in the UK. He's best known from his makeup tutorials on YouTube as well as his collaboration channel called Perfect Androgyny. Joseph has worked with a variety of drag queens from the hit TV show, Rupaul's Drag Race, and recently launched his very own website. For more information on Joseph, please check out his social media at the bottom of this article as well as his brand new website.

EYES

My theory with eye makeup is to focus on enhancing the natural shape, colour and intensity of the eye area. If the eyes are the windows to the soul, let's make them really stand out. What I try and achieve is actually about creating contrast, either with light and shade or with colours opposite on the colour wheel, but then from that understanding we can take it a step further and there are some easy ways of doing that.

If we take blue eyes, the opposite colour to a blue on the colour spectrum would be the secondary colour orange, however a highly saturated blue in true contrast would be an unsaturated orange. If the iris is composed of a variety of colour shades and we want to enhance the illusion of green and create more of an aqua eye, we can actually use tools as guides to find the most complimentary colour. Computers I think are a really obvious help because using software like photoshop or more simple editing programs tend to have a palette of colours. We then find the colours we want to achieve on their spectrum and use the program to invert that, which showcases what would make the maximum impact. That is the easiest way of finding the most contrasting shades, and once you've learnt the basics it's easy to apply to all colours. With brown eyes, we're looking at a tertiary colour that's unsaturated and can be more dark in shade, so what do we do to enhance that colour? We pick the colour undertone within that brown and we can invert it. Browns are really fun because you can really bring out the intensity and dimensions by experimenting with different colours in the same way.

Once we've intensified the colour, I think it's always great to elongate and enlarge the natural shapes of the eye. Mascara is an absolute must and I tend to stick with a black mascara as a rule, then if we want to create further contrast we can use coloured mascaras on top in layers to further create a contrast. Longer lashes really do enlarge the eyes so finding mascaras that really define the lashes is the easiest way to do that. Defining the tideline under the lashes really intensifies the shape, and using lighter shades on the waterline help create more of an awake look as they extend the height of the eye.

One factor I work on is to try and create symmetry as much as possible in the face and I think it's more obvious in the eye area. An easy way to help this is to use the shadows we've chosen in the shadow of the socket, and then matching that up on the opposite eye, while creating a shape with the lash line. Looking at our faces in a mirror reflection and then using again a computer program like a webcam, we can compare and contrast from side to side and change the positions of all these shadows. If we want to take that further we can use eyeliner to actually hide the shape, we can create the illusion of thicker lashes, extend the width of the eye, and even change the angle of the eye. It's always fun to add more of an effect to the eye area with liners and we can use contrasting shades in this area to enhance it further. Have fun with eye makeup, it washes off so try and see what works for you.

CONTOUR/HIGHLIGHT

Contouring and highlighting is an essential part of makeup but how far you want to take it is really up to you. The skin isn't one colour, especially with deeper skin tones so my advice is to create a base that brings out the beauty of the face, and apply contour where it would have a positive effect. I look at colour correction with this to some degree, applying a bright white under the eyes isn't going to make your eye area look as clean as if you used a colour that countered the blue of the undereyes, and using a base in areas around the chin that matches your skin, isn't going to be as clean looking if you are covering a beard or any discolouration, it will look greyer. So you have to take everything into account and work with what you have, you need to use the right colours accordingly.

I am a huge fan of the doll creating Noel Cruz who repaints celebrity dolls, for my aesthetic I like painting my own makeup in the same way, I don't think there is a rule for where the contours should be however mimicking the natural shadows of the face works quite nicely. I prefer using less saturated contours as we get paler, greys and muted beiges work better than terracottas. Deeper skintones can definitely carry more colour however.

I focus on symmetry in the same way I would in the eye area so using a webcam tool and comparing a mirror to a true reflection would be a great way of seeing what might work for a particular face. I like extending the undereye right up against the nose contour to create a more central nose shape and that's my signature way of doing it.

LIPS

My tips for lips is to start off with an exfoliant product to remove all dead skin, I love a chemical exfoliator from Aveda and it just removes all the dry skin. Then keep them super hydrated with a good skincare routine. One tip I've found is lip plumpers bring an allergic reaction to the lip area and somehow this seems to prevent them from chapping so much in the wintry months, then I apply lip moisturizers to keep them in check.

I really love working with nudes and beiges in the lip areas that mimic natural colouring, but lips are the most exciting part of the face and you can play them up in anyway you like. I think certain colours work better on different skin undertones, if we look at the colour wheel it's best to avoid using products that would create a huge contrast with yellow as this won't neccesarily bring the most out of your teeth, but just have fun with it. I love hugely saturated colours on darker skintones and I tend to work more with liners than lipsticks.

BLENDING

I probably have a little bit of a different view point on blending because I use makeup in the same way I paint which is a little bit more expressionist. I just want to hit the points that look right to me and my style is a little bit more smudgey, I prefer to blend with the creamier products or a kohl, and set with colour as opposed to use the powders to create more of an airbrush like finish.

My tips for blending in the eye is to make sure the surface of the eyelid is free of oils so we can start off with some loose powder or even an eyeshadow primer. Then I think it always works better to start with paler colours and then lay them down where you need them, using a clean brush to blend out. If you want to achieve a more seamless finish then you can use face powders in conjunction with your eyeshadows to really soften the edges.

When it comes to blending the contours of the face, use the warmth of your fingers to blend creams out. I think a damp blending sponge get's a flawless finish with a variety of products. If you want a more seamless blend, don't contour with creams, start off with a base colour and a highlight and then apply contours with darker powders once it's set. Always set the base before you go in with powders also as it will grab to areas.

WIGS

My tips with wigs is to get full lace wigs, I prefer human hair as I wear them more as a substitute to hair extensions and I remove all the lace. I always use a water soluble glue to apply them to the hairline now, I tried latex and spirt gum and they didn't really wear well on the hair line so I've made my own glue now which works better and dissolves when you wash it. Always air dry wigs because they don't have the natural protection of your scalps oils, and try not to overwash and over style them. I am still learning about wigs as I've always had long hair, but I've learned to add concealer into the hairline and use tools and products specific for hair extensions. If you are more into drag styles of wigs, synthetic hair is more robust and they're much more affordable.

Mean Girls Part 3

Being friends with a lot of drag queens on facebook, I see my share of drama. Not only on my main news feed but I'm also part of a couple Facebook groups where queens are supposed to be giving their advice to new queens who just started.

I understand if you put yourself out there as a performer and an entertainer, that you should have a really tough skin. That will develop over time and you will eventually learn that not everyone in this world is going to accept you. It's a sad reality that everyone has to learn the hard way. BUT there's a line that shouldn't be crossed.

People are probably going to yell at me for writing this article, but I really don't care. What I do care about is the people who have shown support for me and have believed in me when other people didn't. I really dislike when some queens are absolutely horrible to each other for no apparent reason.

I know some people who will post photos  of themselves in drag and yes, maybe they have a few things to improve on. We all started somewhere....but to bully people and call them names...? What does that do for you? As a performer, you should know that you can be yourself and be "honest", as you call it, but if you have an attitude like that you're just digging your own grave.

No one will want to work with you if you're going to have such a negative attitude. Why not give the person some advice? Maybe you will make a new friend and they might just end up one of your daughters that you mentor.

I know I'm not a drag queen. I'm not a drag expert. But I have a voice. I think we should be a lot less harsh and we should stand together and help each other out. If you don't like someone, then ignore them. Perform, have fun, make friends, and if someone asks for advice...please be humble because you will never know when you will need advice. If you burn all your bridges, you won't have anyone to turn to.

Everyone is working hard to make their careers explode. Greed and fame can get in the way. Please don't go around acting like you're better than everyone else because everyone has different ideas and perceptions of what "drag" is.

Lacey Fauxx Vanderpump: Pretty, Genuine, And Humble

Meet Lacey Fauxx Vanderpump, a performer from Denver, Colorado. She has made it a point that she wants to stay humble no matter what. Behind the drag, she loves to write in her free time and is just an all around genuine person with a heart of gold.

1. Describe your drag persona.

Lacey Fauxx Vanderpump....how would you describe Lacey... She's the sweetest bitch you'll ever meet. I've been told sometimes I look intimidating but I'm seriously one of the sweetest girls. I'm pretty much everything Steven (My Boy Altered) isn't. I'll be flirty and talk to guys. I'll be the first one to be on the dance floor and ready to twirl but don't try to be shady because I'll also be the first one to read you... but remember she's a lady and fightings for trash #PaintsNails

2. Who would you say is your biggest inspiration?

For drag I've had many. Manila, Phi Phi, Miss Fame, Raven, Juju and many local queens I look up to and get advice from. But if I had to choose just one Id probably say Manila. Every time I've met her she's been so friendly and nice. She's taken the time to sit and have a conversation with me and I just love how she can be campy then glamorous then fishy then comedy and she's always changing and always entertaining.

3. In your opinion, do you think Rupaul's Drag Race has helped the drag community or has it made it worse?

I believe it's helped the drag community tremendously. I always have seen drag queen as I got older and went to clubs but now it's so mainstream and more people are accepting of it. But it's also made people want to step up their drag.

4. What is something you're passionate about besides drag?

I'm usually always on the go or working or having a show but on my down time I love writing.

5. Where did you get your drag name?

This is a funny story actually... So I was very picky about my drag name because once I chose my name I didn't want to change it ever again. I wanted something that rolled off your tongue and was catchy but I also wanted it to sound kinda sexy. So I went back and forth with my friends for weeks before i got my name. My name is actually my best friends stripper name. You know the name of your first pet and the name of the first street you lived on. So it was Lacey Fox... There was so Many Fox and Foxx girls out there already so I decided to to a play on words and Lacey Fauxx was born. Im a faux woman with faux boobs and faux hair. I later picked up my drag mothers last name Vanderpump.

6. What is the biggest lesson you've learned in your drag career?

The biggest lesson I've learned is ALWAYS stay humble. Everybody is always watching you and the things you say and do and at the end of the day your followers and supports will make or break you.

7. What is something that not many people know about you?

These last 2 years have been very rough for me. I come from a family that suffers from drug and alcohol abuse. I almost lost my mother to alcohol in early 2014 so as much as I love to party I always take care of myself.

8. What is something that you would like people to remember about you?

I like to be remembered as the queen who is genuinely a good and nice person. Someone who leaves a lasting impression with you.

9. What is your biggest insecurity?

I used to really care what other queens thought about me and if they liked me and it made me very insecure about my drag but as I started working more and more it was like Rupaul said 'Unless they payin' yo bills pay them bitches no mind"

10. If you could have a superpower, what would you pick and why?

If i had superpowers I'd want to be just like Storm from the XMen. The bitch can change the weather and fly and she always has a slutty costume.

11. When and why did you start doing drag?

I started drag almost a year ago. I was really intrigued by drag when I first watched it on Rupauls Drag Race. Then I started going out to clubs more and seeing these girls perform and i would always say "I wanna do that. I can do that" but at the time I was in a relationship that didn't support it. So when my relationship ended I kind of really studied drag and eventually through myself into it and I'm really proud of how far I've came in such a short amount of time.

12. What's your favorite product that you use that you feel you can't live without?

Besides the usual Paint sticks and High pigmented shadows its actually a super cheap product that I love and helps me so much. Its a E.L.F jumbo shadow pencil.

13. What is your favorite thing/least favorite thing about the drag community?

My least favorite thing is how some of these drag families or cliques kind of team up on people or think they are better then others or try to team up and be drama. But my favorite thing about drag is almost the same thing. I've had some seasoned queens take me under their wing and give me some amazing tips and tricks that have really helped me out.

14. Does your family support your career choices?

I've been very blessed with how accepting my family has been with everything. It hasn't always been like this, being the only openly gay one in my family but my family has been super accepting of it and watch my few performances I get recorded... I mean my mom bought me a huge pair of AB stoned earnings today. They have become some of my biggest fans.

15. In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception of drag?

I think one of the biggest misconceptions of drag is that we all over the top bitchy queens who want to be girls. Guys have stopped talking to me after I told them I do drag because they said they didn't want to talk to someone who wants to be a girl or who is feminine... I was like uuummmmmm HELLO we've been talking for how long and I tell you I do drag and now you think this, KICK ROCKS! So I think thats been one of the biggest issues I've dealt with.

RUPAUL'S DRAG RACE SEASON 7 CAST REVIEW

I know I try to separate myself from Rupaul's Drag Race because I feel that a lot of other artists are misunderstood and underestimated, and I plan to keep it that way, but seeing all these posts about Season 7, I'm getting the urge to write a review of what I think of each queen individually. Let's start with the queen I know the best considering she performs an hour away from my house.

1. Trixie Mattel

I am absolutely IN LOVE with Trixie. When I started getting into the drag scene and the clubs around me I did research to find out who my more local queens are and I found Trixie. I've been following her for almost a year already and I'm so excited she's on this season. I feel like she brings a special twist to the stereotypical cast and she's so campy and fun. I feel like a lot of people are underestimating her and usually the underestimated ones are the ones who get the farthest. Fingers crossed for Trixie. Bless her plastic heart. :)

2. Jaidynn Diore Fierce

Oooo girl! This one has the capability to put a bitch in her place and do it with honesty and class! She's really spunky and full of energy, I can't help but love her. She reminds me of an extremely energetic and sassy Latrice Royale. Get it girl! If she goes home early I will be insanely disappointed. GIVE ME MORE!

3. Miss Fame

I cannot get enough of Miss Fame and her flawless appearance. Sometimes I wonder if she's even human or if she's a robot disguised in flawless porcelain skin. I've gotten to know Miss Fame from her well known YouTube tutorials on how to beat that face. She was in high demand to be on Drag Race and now I really hope she makes it far, because that bitch is really talented and I feel she will slay!

4. Pearl

Everyone should know who Pearl is and if you don't, you've been living under a rock. Pearl has been everywhere in the online drag scene. I found her through another queen named BibleGirl666 (I love you Bible Girl. That was a shameless shoutout). Miss Pearl is an icon who has a really chill and relaxed personality but I see her reading bitches if it needs to be done. I have high hopes for this one and she has the potential to outshine anyone who crosses her. :)

5. Sasha Belle

All I can say when I think of Ms Sasha Belle is YAASSSSSS. She's proven that she's extremely versatile and you never really know what she's going to pull out. She's another one who I have high hopes for and I can't express enough how much I admire her work. She even does these Facebook videos where she has impersonated some of the other Season 7 cast members and she's extremely funny.

6. Max Malanaphy

I've been following Max for a few months on social media. I've heard a lot of people comparing her to Milk and Sharon Needles but in my opinion her style is all her own. She mixes camp with a dash of spookiness and just a bit of high fashion. She made her drag persona an actual character in her Meet The Queens video and she's just all around interesting.

7. Jasmine Masters

Jasmine has been really underestimated by people and it's been bothering me. To me, she seems like one of the most honest and down to earth queens that will be on the show this season. She has a serious of online videos called "I have something to say..." and she's given me quite a few laughs and has showed me that honesty is the best quality one can have. I have a lot of respect for her and I think people should give her a chance.

8. Katya Zamolodchikova

Ms Katya, I am LIVING! I can already tell that she is going to be one of my favorites to watch this season. She's so creative. I was on Facebook earlier and I saw her and Trixie share a video of Katya performing "My Heart Will Go On" from the Titanic movie and it was the Russian version. She made herself the iceberg and had this strap on half Titanic boat on her shoulders and wrapped around her body. I swear it was the greatest thing ever and I feel like when it comes to out of the box creativity, she will SLAY.

9. Kasha Davis

Kasha seems so genuine and sweet. While I was watching her Meet The Queens video, she had me smiling the whole time. She's very down to earth and has a very positive attitude. I don't know too much about her yet but I feel like even if she does end up going home she will still have a hell of a career ahead of her. She's absolutely beautiful and I feel like she has the potential to take the world by storm.

10. Tempest Dujour

When I first saw the snapchat hints, I seriously thought Tempest was Miss Coco Peru. I don't think I can describe Tempest's style exactly, but let's just say she's one of those queens that you either understand or you don't. She's very camp and out of the box but still extremely gorgeous. I feel like if she ever collaborated with Miss Coco Peru, it would be absolutely EXPLOSIVE. She has experience and she knows who she is as a performer and it shows. I can't help but love her. She's going to be a threat this season in my opinion.

11. Ginger Minj

Ginger is probably going to be the sweetheart this season. I feel like she's going to maybe be the one who just wants everyone to get along. I don't see her as being really sassy unless she has to be. I feel like she reminds me of someone who just wants to make friends with everyone unless you cross her path. That being said, I don't think people should underestimate her either because I see her as being someone that will use that quality to her advantage. While everyone else is fighting I feel like she will be the one who just stays out of it and works hard on her challenges. I could be wrong but I really love her. She's a sweetheart.

12. Kandy 'Ho

Kandy is the Puerto Rican of this season! I always end up loving the Puerto Rican contestants of every season. Kandy is absolutely adorable. I've heard her name basically everywhere and I know she's a very loved queen in the drag world. Her look is very polished and I swear I need to go to Puerto Rico and drink some of their water or something because I feel that Puerto Rican Drag Queens are all so polished and beautiful. But Kandy isn't like every other Puerto Rican queen because along with her beauty comes a lot of personality and attitude as well and I love it! You go girl!

13. Violet Chachki

GIRL. I have been following Violet just as long as I have been following Max. She's absolutely gorgeous!  Her style is very high fashion and her face is always beat for the galaxies. If she ever has to lip sync for her life, she would have that performance in the bag. She can dance, she's extremely pretty, and she can most definitely perform. Hands down.

14. Kennedy Davenport

Last but certainly not least, Kennedy Davenport. I honestly didn't know much about her until she got ruvealed with the rest of the cast so I had to do my own research. I found out she appeared on the hit TV show America's Got Talent and has also done pageants. From watching her Meet The Queens video, her personality was really laid back. But it's like when she gets onstage she goes crazy and she's unstoppable. I really love that about her and I hope she translates that energy into the challenges because if she does that, she will probably steal that crown.

As you can tell, I love all 14 contestants and I can find nice things to say about each and every one of them. There are a few I knew of already and a few that I've never heard of before. I usually try to stay away from the show on this page because my page is more focused on queens that haven't been on the show. I've spoken with a few girls from the show but most of my interviews are queens that haven't been on Drag Race. This review though, it's been in high demand. Ever since the ruveal happened, I've gotten lots of messages from people asking what I thought of all the contestants. My main overall judgement is that it's going to be a close season and all of them could possibly steal that crown. There isn't one that is better than the other. I'm also going to say that I wanted to do this because I see a lot of these contestants getting underestimated and I don't exactly agree with it because everyone does their own thing. I think all of them will bring their own talents and it's going to be one hell of a season. You're all welcome!

Ironica Leigh is Better Than Makeup

Ironica Leigh is a performer from Houston, Texas who didn't want to do drag at first. She openly admits she's a Willam Belli knock off and combines a sassy personality with charismatic performances.

1. Who is Ironica Leigh?

A Willam knock-off. A cheap imitation and combination of classic characters including: Madeline Ashton from Death Becomes Her, Cher from Clueless, Patsy Stone from Ab Fab, Jinkx Monsoon, The Van Come Lady, and anyone else I can steal a joke from.

2. When and why did you start doing drag?

Well back in late 2011, I knew and loved quite a few local drag queens and worked at a bar; I was then roped into an "employee turnabout" show to do drag for charity, so I came up with the name, borrowed a bunch of shit, and bought my first pair of heels. I'd never wanted to deal with wigs, nails, shoes, etc. so I told myself it would be a one-time thing only! The first number I performed was Paula Abdul's "Straight Up", by which time I was drunk enough for the performance to be more appropriate of Paula now. My second number was Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know" which I performed in a wedding dress and smeared lipstick. I ended up making so much money for charity that I decided it was something I could get into on a regular basis. 3 years later and HERE I AM!

3. Who is your biggest inspiration?

ME! I borrow liberally from all of the talent I'm blessed to witness, but the sole inspiration is myself, my ability to take something: an idea, an outfit, a joke, and make it fit me so perfectly that the audience loves it.

4. What is your biggest accomplishment?

COMEDY, in general! Anytime I can make someone laugh, it's the best feeling in the world. Sure, the money is nice and the praise, the photos people want is a all great, but nothing makes me feel better than when people are rolling from something I'm able to do on stage.

5. What is your coming out story?

Me telling everyone I'm gay and them pretty much being like "Well duh!" I was fairly effeminate that it wasn't really a shock, so much as a "hey, I'm just making an official statement." I was blessed with a supportive family and friends who would never think twice.

6. Do you have a most embarrassing moment?

I suppose telling an audience that they're deader than Robin Williams only two days after he died and getting boo'd counts. But I live to embarrass myself constantly on stage. Sometimes the humor doesn't translate and the embarrassment from people NOT laughing can be terrible. Fortunately, if anything goes wrong, most people think it's part of my act and I just play it off. "Oh, I spent half my performance with my wig hanging off the side of my head? I meant to do that!" "2 of my press-on nails popped off? It was an artistic choice."

7. What is your favorite drag item that you own?

I have a black dress, shredded, covered in pink spray, and I perform Pink's "Try" in it. It's very sentimental to me because I am not a "dancing queen", but I learned the ever-loving shit out of that choreography and it's been an incredible winner with audiences, I think the dress is an intricate part of the performance and if I had to burn all of my drag except for one thing, I would keep that dress.

8. What is your favorite song to perform to?

I mixed Deven Green's "Welcome to My Home" parody with "Malambo no. 1" by Yma Sumac. That mix defines what I love to do on stage to a T.

9. How long does it take you to transform into Ironica?

When I first started, it took me anywhere from 2-4 hours and I looked terrible. Then I got to 2-4 hours and looking decent. If I spend 2-4 hours now, I think I look pretty good, but I usually settle for 1-2 hours and looking decent. The make-up has always been my least favorite part and if I could pay someone else to paint me every night, I'd be in heaven. I'm more of a personality than a work of art.

10. If you could rid the world of one thing, what would it be and why?

Right now? Suicide. I recently lost a close friend who offed herself with very little explanation and it's infuriating to think there was no way to stop her because there was no warning.

Ask me again in a week though and I'll probably want to rid the world of German Shepherds cause my ex was into bestiality.

11. What is something you really want people to remember about you?

Besides my fascinating ability to make people laugh, I want people to always remember that I was better than Chloe Knox.

12. Do you have a favorite makeup artist?

No. And I respect the people who spend a lot of time perfecting it as an art, but I hate make-up. I hate the process of putting on make-up, I hate that it's so expensive, I hate the level of make-up is often debatable and causes pompous people to criticize each other in the worst ways about the way they do it. I want to get my own make-up level to where *I* think it's good and that'll be good enough for me. Because if I start judging my make-up based on what other people think, there will ALWAYS be people who hate it and think it's not good enough. And I would fuck their boyfriends for revenge.

13. If you could have a superpower, what would it be and why?

The ability to freeze time. I mean, I could rob banks, punch people who deserve it, and probably make orgasms last forever.

14. If you could work with anyone in the future, who would it be and why?

I will work with ANY film or TV producer who can give me a hit film/TV show. PERIOD.

Collaborative-wise? That's tough. You never know who you're going to mesh with, but I imagine any comedy queen from RuPaul would do (and I mean the actually funny ones, not the ones who think they're funny and actually suck, like Kelly Mantle or whatever her name is.)

15. Do you plan on uploading more videos to your YouTube channel in the future?

ABSOLUTELY! With Chloe moving to LA early next year, I'm planning to premiere a new YouTube series called "Drag Police." In light of Joan Rivers' passing, I would love to do something as a tribute where I pretty much make fun of every queen I can.
